maps in 1st grade

This week in first grade we are going to be learning about different types of maps, how we can use them and read them.

Make it stand out

Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

Map skills are very important for us. Maps help us get to where we are going and help us understand our communities and our world. (or possibly hidden treasure!) Your child will be learning about basic map skills. They will be learning about directional words like north, south east, and west by using a compass rose. For example when looking at the map below they will be able to tell you after you enter the zoo to see the meerkats you need to go east. They will also be able to read a key. They will know that a fork and knife, when looking at the map below, means there is food and drinks available at that location.

Here are some great books about

There's a Map on My Lap by Dr.Suess

Pete the Cat and the Treasure Map by James Dean

Here are some ideas to help your child develop their map skills.

  1. At home you can have your child make a map of their neighborhood or a map of their house.

  2. You can point out maps to your child whenever you are out. For example, if you are going to Haywood mall instead of walking around until you find Build a Bear, have your child go to the map and find Build a Bear then follow their directions to get there.

  3. In your yard have your child “bury hidden treasure” and make a pirate map to it like in Pete the Cat and the Treasure Map  by James Dean.
